Farrugia Brothers "Tas-srieken"

Posted by Unknown at 6:08 AM Friday, May 6, 2011 Labels: Farrugia, malta, Maltese, Srieken
One of the traditions I'm proud of - Sulky making.

Thereis only one workshop in Malta, that is still does tailor-made sulkies, carts and karozzini (horse cabs). Other workshops do parts of them or just do repairs. Vince and Ninu Farrugia from Qormi learnt the tricks of the trade from their late father (Ninu Farrugia aka Ninu tal-magni) who also happens to be my grand father...therefore Uncle Vince and Uncle Ninu! Nannu Ninu's work consisted in setting up bread making ovens and mills. His job evolved following a series of changes in bakery operations. There is a lot to say about this tradition and online bibliography is lacking about this topic. My uncles are often visited by university students who choose this topic for a thesis or dissertation. The engineering behind the making of sulkies and cabs is an intrinsic one.

Awareness is necessary to avoid having such traditions dying out. At Merill Eco Tours we created a Crafts teamed tour to show locals and tourists the very best of local crafts.
